Automated Lamellar
Keratoplasty (ALK) - Lasik Term and Glossary
A refractive eye surgery procedure
that has been used successfully in correcting relatively
high degrees of nearsightedness and some cases of
farsightedness. The first step in the procedure involves
the removal of a flap of tissue from the central zone of
the cornea, using an ultra-sophisticated surgical
instrument known as a microkeratome. The instrument is
further used to slice micro-thin layers of the exposed
corneal tissue as required to correct the existing
refractive eye disorder. The flap is then replaced
without use of sutures.
