Excimer Laser - LASIK Term and Glossary

A high-energy "cold" laser that is used in the PRK procedure to sculpt the central zone, or visual axis, of the cornea to correct mild to moderate cases of nearsightedness. The laser emits a pulsating beam of ultraviolet light that ablates, or vaporizes, the corneal tissue to the degree designated and guided by a computer within the laser system.
