LASIK Alternatives: Alternatives to LASIK Eye Correction

LASIK is not the sole option for eye corrections. There are other alternatives to LASIK eye corrections that can provide the same result but in a less risky procedure compared to LASIK.

  • Silicone Hydrogen Soft Contact Lens
This is the main alternative to the surgery. It has lenses that are permeable which can be worn for as long as 30 consecutive days without any risk.

  • Corneal Reshaping Technology
It is a non-surgical process by which it is able to reshape the cornea overnight. This is done through the use of oxygen permeable therapeutic contact lenses. These contact lenses are placed within the eye just before going to sleep at night and then removed upon waking up.

  • Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (GP)
This is also known as oxygen permeable contact lenses. They are created from durable and rigid plastics that are able to transfer oxygen within the eye. However, these lenses should not be confused with the old contact lenses that are not used in eye science any longer. GP is able to transmit more oxygen to the eye than the usual type thus better vision is achieved. It also provides durability and better resistance than any other soft contact lenses.

  • LASEK
LASEK stands for Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomiluesis. Patients whose corneal tissue had lesser density than others are the best candidate for LASEK. LASEK creates the same result as compared to LASIK but it calls for less tissue removal. In LASEK procedure, only a thinner surface epithelial flap is produced. Some surgeon would opt for this treatment in order to reduce the amount of tissue employed in the flap thus a denser tissue is left intact all along. LASEK is usually performed on one eye at a time and the recovery time is longer than LASIK.

  • PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy)
Most surgeon advised LASIK because of its painlessness. But, when it comes to the effectiveness, PRK still ranks the first. During the procedure, the epithelial tissue is scraped and removed through the use of a laser. PRK is done on one eye each time and this procedure also contains the longest recovery time. Its complication is primarily similar to LASEK and LASIK although this calls for more post operative visits than the two.

  • Intraocular Lens Implants
This is highly analogous to the cataract extraction. During the process, the old lens is removed through surgical process and the clear intraocular lens implant is employed in order to offer clearer vision.

  • CK (known as Conductive Keratoplasty)
This is done through the use of radiofrequency energy in a spherical pattern through the periphery of the cornea. It was said that the heat energy shrivel the corneal tissue.
