Lasik Complications: Risks
involve in Lasik Surgery
Patient’s confidence over
Lasik procedure has abundantly developed over the past few
years after the success of millions in United States. With
the sophisticated technology available these
days, outcomes are normally favorable. The US
military for example, had now adopted the use of refractive
surgery such as Lasik to lessen the use of contact lenses
and eyeglasses on armies.
If you are intended to undergo a
Lasik surgery but worried about its complications,
then you should be comforted with the fact that the risk is
extremely low. A lot of complications are easily resolved
through the help of re-treatment and improvement of the eye.
Complete vision loss happens in very rare cases. Choosing a
competent eye surgeon is the most significant step in
lessening the complications.
However, you should not
overlook some common Lasik complications when deciding on
this treatment. Here are the lists of:
- Undercorrection and
Overcorrection
Patients respond differently
on the treatment. This difference may either lead to undercorrection or overcorrection of eye strain like
farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism. The
situation can become disturbing to both the
patients and the doctor. Luckily, it can
be resolved through re-treatment.
- Dry Eye
The nerves surrounding the
cornea are important to produce tears as well as to ensure
the presence of moist at all times. During the treatment,
some of these nerves are damaged which cause permanent
dryness of the eyes. Even if these nerves will regenerate
after some time, there are reported incidents wherein a
patient may have a lasting dry eye problem. Symptoms of dry
eyes are sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and
discomfort.
- Regression
Studies show that most
patients will live their life with good eyesight for a long
time after the procedure. But there are some instances
wherein a loss of vision takes place. In fact, 14 percent of
patients may experience mild to moderate quantity of myopia.
It should be remembered that whether or not someone have
Lasik, eyesight loss will still occur for sure.
- Corneal Abrasion
5% of Lasik
procedures are expected to result into corneal abrasion. In
some cases, corneal abrasion may heal even without any
treatment. But, there are some that would require a bandage
contact lens.
- Flap Complications
The flap is made through the
help of a bladed instrument known as the microkeratome. Complications on the flap include
incomplete flap, buttonhole flap and free cap.
Incomplete flap
usually made by a malfunction of the microkeratome.
Buttonhole flap happens when the flap cut is extremely thin. Free cap takes
place when there is nothing that will keep the flap
connected to the eye.
- Epithelial Ingrowth
This happens when the
epithelium transfer into the bottom of the flap margin that
it continues to grow even after the surgery. This can lead to
blurred vision and other complications.
