Wavefront-Optimized Lasik

Wavefront-optimized Lasik is a standard Lasik procedure performed using Wavelight's Allegretto Wave Eye-Q laser, which is four times faster than conventional excimer lasers. It is also based on phoropter refraction. This new Eye-Q laser has been found to reduce the complications such as glare, halos, and other night vision problems which can happen with conventional Lasik treatments.

Wavelight's claims that its Wavefront-optimized ablations could preserve the natural aspheric shape of the cornea much better compared to standard Lasik. This procedure is currently approved by FDA for treating the following refractive errors:

  • Up to -12.00 D of myopia (nearsightedness), with up to -6.00 D of astigmatism

  • Up to +6.00 D of hyperopia (farsightedness), with up to +5.00 D of astigmatism

Wavefront-Guided Lasik (Custom Lasik) vs. Wavefront-Optimized Lasik

While Wavefront-Guided Lasik may benefit some patients, results from new study done by FDA show that there are no significant difference between the outcomes of treatment performed using Wavefront-Guided Lasik and Wavefront-Optimized Lasik.

The study was designed to directly compare the two approaches using the Allegretto laser. Results show that Wavefront-Optimized Lasik gives excellent result in correcting spherical aberration, without affecting the higher order aberrations.
